>> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00. get ready for stormy weather when you go out this morning on this thanksgiving eve. >> oh, yeah. windshield wipers are working overtime to help drivers find their way on the wet roads and you'll find flooded streets and traffic problems and also delays at the airport. we'll get your forecast from lawrence karnow in just a moment, and check with cate caugiran at sfo. our live coverage begins with anne makovec in redwood city, though. >> reporter: good morning. it's wet out here. the rain is coming down as we speak. i was driving down from san francisco and there did seem to be a lot more traffic than normal during the early-morning hours. so a lot of people travelin for the thanksgiving holiday. it used to be the busiest travel holiday but it doesn't appear to be. but there is more traffic on the roads and they are wet. i hydroplaned a couple of times

coming down here on highway 101. here are picture we shot at the redwood city caltrains station. people doing planes, trains and automobiles for their thanksgiving travel. we are waiting for things to pick up. it's only 5 a.m. but we'll talk to people about how the rain is impacting their travel plans. but first let's check in with lawrence karnow because he has more information on how long this rain is going to last. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the rain continues around the bay area but it tapers off toward the latter part of the morning. right now hi-def doppler picking up on all the showers outside. it pushes through parts of the south and east bay now. you can see the rain line shifted southward. the cold front moving through overnight with winds. pockets of moderate rainfall. if you are at the 280, more of that towards sunnyvale, milpitas. we'll see this on and off this

morning but then it will we understand down. by the middle of the morning the middle of the day, sunshine will peek through. right now cloudy skies. temperatures are very mild if you are heading out. numbers in the 50s and even low 60s right now into oakland. if you plan on traveling, though, well, we are not done with the rain just yet. we have this system moving through right now and on the back side a few more clouds will keep the showers going a logical long they are morning but then should taper off. right now no reports yet of delays at sfo but likely going to see some delays this morning. oddly enough, guess what, the place we check delays it is down. that's right. you can't even check delays across the country now because of some of the problems with the website. around houston we're going to be 81 and partly cloudy skies. 75 denver. 59 chicago. 50 new york. around the bay today we'll find some 60s and drier weather toward the afternoon with partly cloudy skies by the afternoon. of course if you would like to see your doppler radar hi-def doppler is up on our website you can check it out at cbssf.com.

go there and click on weather and you will see that's hi-def doppler right there so you can see that the rain is falling in your neighborhood. let's go to traffic now with elizabeth. >> you can see a bunch of traffic cameras on that website, as well. unfortunately, it's a little difficult to see traffic this morning. check out one of our live cameras. this is the dublin interchange. you can make out those headlights moving westbound and it looks okay in the westbound direction but we have a hotspot developing in the eastbound lanes. to the maps a traffic alert issued because of a jackknifed big rig. weather doesn't help matters. traffic alert eastbound 580 approaching vasco road it sounds like at least three lanes are blocked possibly 4. so we are starting to see backups actually in both directions. right now the drive out of the altamont pass if you are heading westbound 16 minutes but again expect a good sized delay especially going eastbound. elsewhere southbound 880 approaching 980 they just cleared one spinout across the bay area one of many out of lanes so you can see how slick it is past the coliseum. we are getting more flooding reports by the way 101 near

whipple also along the embarcadero coming into san francisco. the right lane is blocked off by cones. crews are working to clear up a bunch of water, standing water, in that lane. elsewhere, here's a live look across the golden gate bridge. not too bad so far for your marin county drive. a lot of overnight roadwork is suspended so not as much out there this morning. looks good towards doyle drive. quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. there's no big delays, no metering lights, so good to go right now heading into san francisco. that is a check of "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. we're approaching one of the busiest travel times of the year and bay area rain is only expected to create more delays. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at sfo with some tips on how to ease your time at the airport. you know, my husband was delayed in getting his flight into sfo last night. got in at 2 a.m. >> reporter: oh, my goodness, michelle. well, if only you heard these tips, it might have changed or maybe not. but at sfo we are reporting no

delays at this point as lawrence said. the faa website is still down but the best bet i was told by an airport representative is to check individually with your own airline to see if there are any delays for your particular flights. but let's talk general travel at sfo. in total about 1.2 million travelers will pass through this airport between friday and november 25. this airport at sfo is expecting a record passenger load. the airport is expecting about 3% more travelers than last year. the flyers we spoke to this morning say they planned for the busy day. >> we did a direct flight so we're not laying over anywhere. and we're here 2.5 hours early. >> reporter: friday is expected to be the busiest day at sfo with about 140,000 flyers arriving and departing so we do have some holiday tips to keep in mind as you get ready to travel this morning. one, check your own bag. some airlines will let you skip

the baggage counter and tag it yourself. you also can precheck with it. sa. tsa has a new program this year if you sign up with them, you can pass through a separate security line. also, you might want to check the smart phone apps. there are new smartphone apps that keep track of security lines so you will know how much time you will spend in those lines. and we want to make note that the busiest bay also is not just sfo but also with our neighbors in the south bay, san jose international airport. they are expecting today to be their busiest travel day of the year and they will see a 2% increase in flyers this year. live at sfo, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. and a man has been found dead in an east bay quarry hours after he went out in the rain to find his cat. divers found the body early this morning in about 30 feet of water behind oakland's rockridge shopping center. the man is believed to have slipped on a steep slope and fallen into the quarry. this morning, u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton says a bus bombing

today in tel aviv, israel, is a terrorist attack. at least 10 people are injured. here are the latest numbers in the current conflict between israel and the palestinian militant group hamas. five people in israel have been killed by rocket fire launched from the gaza strip. in gaza, the death toll is more than 130 since israel started bombing last week. here's susan mcginnis with more. reporter: a bomb destroyed a bus in tel aviv, israel, wednesday. the blast blew out the windows and wounded at least 10 people. investigators don't yet know if the bombing is connected to the battle being waged in the gaza strip. hamas and israel continue their aerial assault on each other. hamas has launched more than 200 rockets in the past 24 hours and israel bombed dozens of targets overnight. >> we are in a battle to save lives. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu met with secretary of state hillary clinton tuesday night. he says israel is hoping for a peaceful end to the fighting.

>> if there's a possibility of achieving a long-term solution to had problem through diplomatic means, we prefer that. >> reporter: clinton assured israel of u.s. support. >> the rocket attacks from terrorist organizations inside gaza on israeli cities and towns must end. >> reporter: secretary clinton met with palestinian leader mahmoud abbas this morning and will meet with egyptian president mohamed morsi later today. >> the goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advance the security and legitimate aspirations of israelis and palestinians alike. >> reporter: egyptian president mohamed morsi is seen as critical to any peace deal. his muslim brotherhood is hamas' parent organization but egypt also has close ties to america and relies heavily on u.s. aid. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington.

many journalists covering the conflict are caught in the middle. this is what cbs reporter charlie d'agata saw from his gaza city hotel early this morning. the israeli military launched dozens of air strikes. he tweeted that he and his colleagues are okay. 5:09. the man who shot and killed two people at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza laughed while receiving his death sentence in court yesterday. a contra costa county jury contributed for two days before determining that nathan burris should receive the death penalty. during the trial he frequently mocked the victims' families. >> i can never forgive him. i hate him. and i'm glad they gave him the death penalty. >> burris will be back in court next month for the judges formal sentencing. nurses are striking for a second day at 8 sutter hospitals in the bay area.

the walkout involves 3300 nurses and hundreds of technicians. the key issues include staffing levels and whether nurses can have paid sick leave. a sutter spokesman says pay hikes would hurt the company. replacement nurses have been brought in to keep the hospitals open. the union that staged a one-day strike against the port of oakland says mayor quan helped get contract talks going again. negotiations had broken down last spring with disagreements over pay, benefits and retirement contributions. yesterday's picket lines stopped activity at the port but it is operating again this morning. there were also pickets at the airports but no travel disruptions. mediations between the company and workers of hostess failed yesterday. it filed for bankruptcy after crippled by strikes this month. the issue goes back to court where a judge will have to sign off on the company's liquidation process. other companies though have expressed interest in acquiring

our traffic cameras are a little difficult to see this morning. this is the san mateo bridge. westbound 92 looks okay across the span. but be careful wherever you're going. a lot of our major freeways have spinouts. they have been clearing them quickly. let's go to the maps. this is one of the worst problems. it's a jackknifed big rig blocking several lanes. they issued a traffic alert eastbound 580 approaching north greenville so we have a slightly different location for this accident now but again it is blocking three lanes, traffic squeezing by slowly in both directions across that stretch. there's the drive time on eastbound 580. usual brake lights in the commute direction out of the altamont pass going towards the dublin interchange. a lot of folks heading towards the airport. one one towards sfo looks okay past candlestick. once you get farther south towards san mateo, we actually have numerous flooding reports

in the area and an overturn accident approaching dore. this is a live look at the nimitz. a little difficult to see northbound 880 traffic heading up towards downtown but we have not seen too many major problems towards oakland airport which is the good news, those headlights are heading towards the coliseum and the airport so we know that lawrence is very busy with his doppler tracking the storm. let's go over to him with the latest. >> yeah. boy, we have that doppler out checking things around the bay area. the rain continuing to fall pretty stormy overnight. we have had some strong gusty winds. now the roads can be a mess. so be careful. high-def doppler radar showing you showers outside right now. they continue to move on through especially heavier east and south bays. we take you to the east bay right now and you can see the rain coming down into oakland, east bay hills orinda. if you are heading out there this morning be careful. puddles and flooding, as well.

temperatures are mild with this system in the 50s and low 60s. by the afternoon, the rain will have ended, skies will part and looks like the temperatures will stay mild into the 60s. so as we look toward the system, it moves onshore some gusty winds ahead of it. behind that we have a lot of moisture that's going to move through this morning so keeping the showers going for a few more hours and then looks like things will begin to taper off. that cold front moving by. behind that high pressure starts to build in but it's a wet start to the day today so be careful. by the afternoon, it should dry out nicely. i think if you are traveling around the state today you will still see showers early on this morning. if you can leave later i think it's better. it had been drier on the roads. high country winter weather advisory 4:00 in the afternoon snow level at 7,000 feet. 65-mile-an-hour gusts so be very careful traveling in the high country. 60s for highs today. then the next couple of days we dry out. sunshine returns, dry weather

on the embarcadero it was a mess, and power outages. >> you can see from the radar we are not out of the woods yet. so let's start with lawrence tracking the current conditions in the weather center. >> yeah. a lot of folks like to travel on this day. i'm hoping they sleep in a little bit. i think later on it will be okay but right now the rain is still falling. a lot of puddles and flooding on the roads. high-def doppler radar picking up on that, most of it heading further south and parts of the east bay right now. you can see the showers continuing toward the san jose area. so we're not done with the storm system just yet but i think as we head in toward the middle of the day the skies will start to part but right now you have the rain coming down and looks like it will continue to do so over the next couple of hours. we have mostly cloudy skies, even some drizzle continuing and light showers into san francisco. the temperatures are very, very mild with the storm system in the 50s even some low 60s right now. we have the cold front that moved through bringing with it strong gusty winds pushing on by now. getting on the back side of it so once it moves by the clouds should begin to part later on this morning and toward the

new ones i have never heard of and i'm sure they will save you time and frustration n terms of travel it's expected to be one of the busiest days but right now as we're hearing, there are no delays out of sfo just as of yet but obviously that could change with the weather and, of course, with the high amount of people that will be here today. now, in general sfo is expecting more flyers than last year about a 3% increase in travelers. all in all about 3.1 million americans will be taking to the skies and 1.2 million of them will pass through sfo between friday and november 25. we spoke to one family traveling to new york city for the big weekend and with the recent hurricane they told us they plan for the weather and potential delays. >> we just planned to go the day before knowing it was going to be a crazy insane day in this weather and all that. my only worry was the hurricane and storm and all that stuff but that's all gone now. so whatever happens, happens. it's going to be great. >> reporter: now, back home to

big factor. >> futures trading suggests wall street will move lower when trading starts in just about 45 minutes. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now with more. good morning, ashley. >> reporter: good morning. on wall street falling oil prices and an announcement that hewlett-packard is taking a nearly $9 billion write-down weighed on energy and tech stocks. dow down 7 yesterday, nasdaq mostly unchange. >> more uncertainty over the unstable greek economy this morning. european union officials failed to reach a deal on giving greece more aid. financial leaders had differences over how long greece should be given to reduce its debt. they need to agree before greece can receive its next bailout loan. it looks like hostess' twinkie is cooked. the snack maker failed to reach an agreement with the bakers union in a private mediation session yesterday. on monday a bankruptcy judge asked the two sides to meet before hostess continued its liquidation process. it was a last-ditch effort to

save the struggling company and more than 18,000 jobs. with no agreement in place, the judge will decide today if the maker of ho ho's, dingdongs and wonder bread can shut down its operation. other companies are reportedly interested in buying some of hostess' more popular brands. and guys, i had a great surprise yesterday. i found in the back of my cup barred some hostess coming up cakes! >> you're an addict, aren't you? >> i am. showers coming in that direction. so more rain this morning. if you sleep in, you may miss most of it. it's going to tail off throughout the morning hours. but heading out the door we have some showers and some very mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s this afternoon. skies will part and we'll see sunshine and mild numbers up into the 60s by the afternoon. the big news will be not a bad travel afternoon. rain moving through the bay area, behind that a few clouds. that will keep the clouds in the bay area throughout the day so partly cloudy skies even after the cold front moves by bringing some gusty winds early on. a wet start to the day but high pressure getting ready to move in is going to settle in over the bay area as we head in towards thanksgiving and right into the holiday weekend, as well. around the state be careful. wet to begin with, temperatures in the mid-60s in sacramento, showers there. high country though, we have some snow across the higher peaks there at about 7,000 feet, winter weather advisories

are up. could see another five inches of snow but some very strong gusty winds out of the south to 65 miles per hour. so be very, very careful traveling in that direction. around the bay area today we are looking at 60s for highs today so fairly mild. and the next couple of days things settle down. thanksgiving looking very nice. should be nice and dry and the temperatures very comfortable. by friday and saturday maybe a couple of 70s making a return and then looks like we'll start to cool down ever so slightly into the weekend but still looking nice and dry as we head in toward the beginning of the next week. let's check the slick roads out there. elizabeth, it's busy. >> you combine one of the busiest travel days of the year, wet weather, and you got a lot of problems on the roads. in fact, chp now dealing with, gosh, a couple of dozen different spinouts all across the bay area. so the bottom line is you need to slow down. it's very dangerous out there. here's a live look at westbound 237 already a bit busy actually as you leave milpitas heading to san jose. a couple of other live traffic cameras. you can see how slick it is

across the bay area. every major freeway i'm seeing at least one spinout. they are clearing them quickly but again, a live look towards oakland airport, we know a lot of folks are heading towards the airport this morning. this is a look at that southbound 880 ride. so far, so good. we actually haven't seen too many issues right there as you pass the oakland coliseum heading down towards hayward. the peninsula is actually a problem. we are getting flooding reports and an accident in the same area in san mateo, southbound 101, approaching dore avenue very slow and go towards 92. elsewhere commuting heading towards the airport, this is a live look closer towards candlestick. looks okay on 101. earlier there was a traffic alert southbound 280 right before 101. several lanes were blocked because of an earlier car fire. the car fire is at least out. another hotspot since 4:30 this morning, a jackknifed big rig and at last check it was blocking up to four lanes eastbound. so it is against the commute but we're seeing big delays in both directions of 580 through
